Early Beginnings
City of Light was founded on October 16, 1987 under the leadership of Pastor James O. Lamptey. Pastor Lamptey came as a missionary to Liberia and later joined the Church of God family. He was later assigned to Church of God Barnersville, now City of Light Church of God as the first pastor. The church preached the undiluted Word of God but remained a small neighborhood church, called Church of God Barnersville until 1998 when the present pastor Bishop John Kun Kun took over as senior pastor. Bro. Kun as he was called led the church to undertake mass crusades in the Barnersville community and around Liberia which eventually led numerous people to Christ and increased the membership.
Bishop Kun & The Expansion of the Church
Bishop Kun also led the Soul Winning Evangelistic Ministries, a network of Pentecostal ministers and believers who God used to deliver thousands of people around Liberia and the world over, from demonic oppression. This also drew many people to the church and necessitated the expansion of the church’s facilities several times. The church was later named City of Light Church of God, a name that was unanimously accepted by all of its members. City of Light has remained a light not only to the Barnersville community but Liberia and the world at large.
The Rise of Great Ministers
Through the grace of God upon the church, many great ministers have been developed and released into ministry and many ordinary people has amounted to prominent people in the society as well as pillars of support to the Body of Christ in Liberia.
The Total Freedom Crusade
City of Light hosts annual crusades around Liberia, notably the Total Freedom Crusade which has run for several years and has won thousands of lost souls unto our Lord, Jesus Christ. The Total Freedom Crusade also brings great men of God from around the world to impart and bless the people of Liberia.
"Project My Voice"
The church is also blessed with several great ministers of the Gospel whose ministries are a blessing to Liberia and the world at large. These ministers host gospel musical programs on different schedules every year. City of Light currently host the biggest musical talent hunt show in Liberia, called “Project My Voice”, that attracts thousands of attendees each year.
Living Above Mediocrity
City of Light, conscious of the grace of liberation upon our Senior Pastor, Bishop John Kun Kun, positions itself as national consciousness to the people of Liberia. We enlighten people on their God-given power to live above mediocrity and make decisions that will better their individual lives and advance the development of Liberia.
The COVID-19 Proclamation
By the grace of God and through divine instructions from God, our Senior Pastor, Bishop John Kun Kun declared the end of the deadly Ebola Virus outbreak in Liberia, when global health authorities projected ten thousand new deaths each week. He also, through the grace of God, declared that COVID-19 will not invade Liberia and Africa and God has upheld his proclamation till today.
