Leadership

City of Light’s leadership is fashioned after the structure approved by World Mission. This includes the senior pastor, the church’s secretary and the Church’s Council. However, some positions are created to conform to the actual leadership needs of our local church. The leadership comprises the Senior Pastor, the Secretary Pastor Church Administrator the Church’ Council and heads of departments and committees. City of Light leadership comprises the following:

The Senior Pastor

The Senior Pastor is assigned to City of Light by Church of God and is the Head of the Church’s Council. The Senior Pastor is responsible to provide spiritual leadership and guidance for the congregation and oversees the entire church. S/He is charged with the responsibility to appoint and/or ordain people to key leadership positions and conducts all spiritual exercises or ordinances within his/her domain.

The Secretary / Administrator

The Secretary/Administrator is appointed by the Senior Pastor and has oversight responsibility over the administrative and financial teams of the church. S/He reports directly to the Senior Pastor and is responsible to work closely with the Senior Pastor to ensure that all other organs of the church run effectively. S/He supervises the Secretariat and Heads of Departments and Ministries and must ensure that all organs of the church work cohesively towards achieving the church’s vision. With the approval of the Senior Pastor, the Secretary/Administrator shall develop policies and procedure to facilitate the smooth and orderly running of the church. S/He is responsible to ensure that all church leaders and workers are trained and equipped to carry out their assigned responsibilities. The Secretary must in consultation with the Senior Pastor, develop and manage a program for continually building the capacities of church leaders and workers.  

In the absence of the Senior Pastor, the Secretary/Administrator assumes leadership of the church. However, he must keep the Senior Pastor abreast with developments while he is away and seek the approval of the Senior Pastor for all key decisions.

The Secretary/Administrator is charged with the responsibility of managing the church’s budget, developing monthly, quarterly and annual reports on the church’s finances, activities and programs.

The Church and Pastor Council

The Church and Pastor’s Council is the highest decision-making body of the Church apart from the Senior Pastor. The council has the responsibility to support the Senior Pastor in planning and implementing activities for the growth and advancement of the church. The council also advises the Senior Pastor on all issues pertaining to the church. Members of the church’s council form part of the church’s leadership and serve as support to the church’s programs and projects and help to facilitate networks between the church, external parties and the society at large. They are required to conduct themselves as ministers.

The Council is also responsible to deliberate and approve all policy documents and major undertakings of the church including the church’s budget, policies, projects, programs etc. The Council is headed by the Senior Pastor and assisted by the Church’s Secretary/ Administrator.

Apart from the Senior Pastor and Church’s Secretary who by virtue of their positions form part of the Church’s Council, all other members of the Council are elected by the congregation during the church’s conference, for a period of two years. The eligibility criteria shall be provided by the Senior Pastor/leadership before the elections. Where required, members of the Council may be appointed by the Senior Pastor.

Ministers

All other pastors appointed to the church’s leadership by the senior pastor are considered Ministers within the church. The foremost responsibility of every minister is to support the vision of the Senior Pastor. Ministers may be given permanent assignments by the Senior Pastor or assigned specific tasks as and when required. Their assignments may alternate when the Senior Pastor deems it expedient.

They are required to provide spiritual guidance for members and mentorship for workers and upcoming leaders. They are also required to engage in activities that contribute to the growth of the church and must conduct themselves in manners worthy of ministers according to biblical principles.

 

Heads of Departments/Ministries

All heads of departments/ministries and their deputies form part of the church’s leadership. Heads of department are responsible to manage the smooth running of their respective departments to support the vision of the church. They are also responsible to lead members of their respective department to achieve the objectives of their departments hence the goals and visions of the church. Heads of departments and ministries are elected by members of their departments. In instances where the posts are to be filled-in urgently, appointments are made by the Senior Pastor.

They are also responsible to ensure that they and their members are in attendance and play their roles at all church activities.

Heads of Committees

Heads of Committees/Teams automatically assume leadership responsibilities. They are responsible for leading members of the committees or teams to achieve the visions and missions in consonance with the vision of the church.
